Very friendly service and very clean locker room. There is one big pool inside, one outside, one Turkish bath and one dry sauna. The waters were about 26-27*

Such a beautiful place. Difficult to get to, the water is a bit cold , not as usual after the thermal springs of Viterbo. In my opinion, it is quite expensive for the services that are provided. The staff is polite, the atmosphere itself is pleasant.

Linge et manteau de bain inclus.(Translated by Google)Pleasant baths and decent sauna. But the price is high (39€ low season at the beginning of September, 5 hours I think, but we stayed 3 hours which is quite enough). There is an indoor pool which is warm (approximately 34-36°C) and an outdoor one at less than 30°C. The pools smell of sulfur, it's definitely thermal water. There is also catering available. Linen and bath coat included.

Terrible value for money and stingy owners. Would recommend visiting any other spa in the area (ie Borgobrufa).Issues we had during the stay:- we booked the spa all day (10am - 7pm) and we’re only allowed 1 towel. They would not exchange the towel and I had to sit in a wet, cold towel through lunch and the spa day. This caused me to get SICK! I have had a cold for 2 days now).- sauna was shut off at 5pm, which seems like they were trying to get us to leave early even though we booked the spa until 7pm- owners were not accommodating, friendly or helpful at all- pools were not warm enough (definitely not 29 degrees). This includes the big gorgeous outdoor pool and inside pool.Would maybe recommend going during the summer for max 5 hours if you want to enjoy the views. They also had super cute cats (2 that were friendly) which made my trip a 2 star and not a 1 star. Overall would actively tell people visiting Umbria to avoid and go elsewhere

Elisabeth O — Google review

This is sad, they ramp up the price to 43€ because they are arrogantly saying it's the only spa in Umbria but you can get in a short time to Viterbo and pay less than half, a short time to Montepulciano and pay half the price for the same time, hell even go to Marche in a short time you get to Frasassi terme, they have around the same temperature of the water still REAL thermal water and the ticket for the same time is just 10€ lol.Get yourself a reality check and lower your head, learn humility from your fellow San Francesco.Reply to the reply:So they tell me the price is justified by the presence of the locker in a SPA, nice joke, because Montepulciano Terme doesn't have lockers included with an advanced system that only requires a bracelet with a chip inside to open them, tell us more please 😏

Atari — Google review

Not recommended.Overpriced and not so clean facility. Moreover the water is cold! (About 28 degree). Not so relaxing

Giacomo G — Google review

Nice relaxing place, indoor and outdoor bathing. I didn't try the food yet.You can pay to access the external pool where the water is fairly warm, I swam there when outside was 8 degrees. In this pool you can collect sulfuric mud deposited on stones at the edge of the pool and apply to the skin.In alternative you can pay to access also the spa, with this you can access sauna, steam room, relaxing bath, and different type of hydromassage.

Manuel S — Google review

Website said Sunny kids spa day that was supposed to come with several things. We drove two hours and when we first spoke to the desk, she told us it wasn't possible for us to use it. After a discussion, we were told we were limited to a certain area and our child was given specific limitations. Looked like a nice spa for adults, but the price you pay for the "Sunny kids" is not worth it and they don't provide what the site says. Make sure you call before you go.

Well preserved Roman gate

(Translated by Google) The arch stands a few steps from Piazza del Mercato, the ancient Roman forum, of which it was the triumphal entrance. The inscription still visible on the front informs that it was built on the initiative of the Spoleto senate in the year 23 AD, in honor of the princes Drusus and Germanicus, respectively son and adopted son of the emperor Tiberius. The arch has a single fornix and is composed of large squared blocks of stone, while the decorations are today very fragmentary. Starting from the Middle Ages, it was incorporated into the nearby buildings, so much so that the western pylon is still not visible today, while the eastern one has been brought to light up to the ancient laying surface, relating to the paving of the cardo maximus.(Original)L‘arco sorge a pochi passi da Piazza del Mercato, l’antico foro romano, di cui costituiva l’ingresso trionfale.

The Casa Romana - Spoleto museum is a beautiful and informative place that provides visitors with a glimpse into the lives and culture of the Roman people. The museum has beautiful floor mosaics and vaulted ceilings, which give visitors an idea of what a typical Roman villa would have looked like in the 1st century AD. The museum also has a variety of exhibits related to Roman culture, such as artifacts from their military campaigns.

(Translated by Google) Not far from Spoleto's cathedral, this modest-sized Roman house can stimulate the imagination, although unfortunately information about the place is very limited. From what I understand, the discovery is quite recent and the excavations on the site cannot yet be considered concluded. There wasn't even a printed brochure available to the visitor. It was certainly a house from the 1st century AD, belonging to a Roman family; it seems that Vespasia Polla, mother of the emperor Vespasian, was the owner. In any case, the impression is that the owning family was rich and important. Walking around the rooms, enriched by signs indicating what they were used for, you notice how large the rooms were with high ceilings; furthermore, the residence had a large courtyard or atrium in the center of the house. Special mention should be made of the marble floors, well preserved and with beautiful patterns throughout the area. In one of the rooms there were remains of paintings on the wall. However, it must be recognized that it is a very small structure, which can be entirely visited in about 15 minutes. Much better than the one in Assisi, without a doubt. Entrance price: €3. P.S.

Suzanna S — Google review

One of the most amazing days we had spent on our month in Umbria. We had a driver from Spello to take us to Pettino and I'm glad we did -- it is quite the incredible ride up into the mountains. We were greeted with an espresso upon arrival at the farm, where we met the family. Loading into 4WD vehicle we followed Luca and his truffle hunting dogs up the mountainside, where they were let loose to hunt for the elusive truffles. The day was picture perfect. The views over the mountain side were breathtaking. Those industrious pups found truffles! We were then taken over the field where the sheet are herded, where Luca made us eggs with the truffles on a gas stove on his tailgate and all paired with Prosecco. Back at the farm we were treated to home cured meats, olive oil and wine, all while Francesca exhibited her pasta making skills. Lunch was in a lovely profession kitchen, consisting of the pasta and truffles (of course), followed by grilled fennel, pork and lamb. All accompanied by their wine! We finished up the meal with a tiramisu. It is a beautiful place and it will forever be in our memories.

We had the most amazing and authentic experience with the Wild Foods family in Pettino. So thankful we found this tour. In a jam-packed 11 days, the experience with Wild Foods Italy was hands down the best thing we did on our trip. It's hard to put in words what an incredible time we had and we will forever be grateful for the hospitality, amazing food, learnings and great times. Thank you from our whole family!

We had an amazing time with Francesca and her family. She greeted us with coffee in the morning. We then went hunting for truffles with 2 friendly dogs. After which we headed to a mountain top were we had champagne and omelets with truffles. Then back down for a home cooked meal...and more truffles! The day was very informative, warm and homey. Our son also enjoyed playing soccer with their son :) If you get the chance, I would highly recommend visiting Francesca.

Natalya K — Google review

Our experience here was great! We accompanied them on a truffle hunt outside, but you don’t have to do any of the work because the dogs find and dig up the truffles. It is a really cool process to see regardless! Then, we picnicked eggs with the truffles we just found, wine, and homemade pecorino cheese. Afterwards, we headed back to the house where we sampled cured meats, more wine, and bruschetta. Francesca made pasta from scratch with truffle sauce, it was delicious! The pasta was followed with a meat course, coffee, and tiramisu. I would recommend a visit here for a great Umbrian experience!

Kaylin E — Google review

The best day we spent in Italy! What an incredible experience Francesca and her family provided for us. A must must must do for anyone in the area. Even worth travelling to Italy just to experience. The most authentic and enjoyable Italian experience once could ask for.

Bronsen B — Google review

We had a wonderful time on this tour and felt completely pampered. I was a little skeptical as I had thought that it would be a smaller group experience (no more than 8-10) but we had about 16 or so. We still felt that we had good conversations and learned a lot about the process since they had multiple people (small operation so most were family which was great) to ask and learn and follow. The cheese and truffles were amazing, and they constantly fed us with delicious food that they made. The "hunt" was just the right amount of time and length. The hosts (Mac and Francesca and their family/staff) were completely gracious and generously gave me a couple of truffles that they had leftover so we could continue to enjoy wonderful truffles after the tour.

Phoebe C — Google review

We were attracted by the 'Truffle Hunt' but in the end it was a great disappointment. You don't get to hunt for it. Their dogs and handlers do all the work. All you do is to follow them around while the dogs hunt. No chance of you hunting your own truffles. I think the owners know that so they throw in free wine and food into the package. If you minus the 'Truffle Hunt' the other experience like having wine and eggs with truffle in the middle of the mountain, then back to the farm having lunch, it was a good experience. But honestly if I had known that we don't get to take part in the hunt, I would not have joined so even though the lunch etc was good, I feel it was a great letdown. I gave two stars because I joined a truffle hunt but there was no truffle hunt for me.

Julia C — Google review

Too much fun! Great hosts and a wonderful experience. Must do if you're in the area.

Shayne J — Google review

Highlight of our trip! Despite thunderstorms passing through, we walked behind the dogs to witness their discovery and retrieval of truffles, but the family provided so many welcoming moments...eating eggs with truffle and Prosecco in the sheep pasture to the making of pasta for dinner and so much more. Such an engaging family!

Anne G — Google review

100% recommended! We actually arranged our trip to Italy around the availability of the truffle hunt here, but later got a bit nervous that this was a bit too expensive. We went anyway and were totally blown away by the family that let us share a bit of their lives. The day starts with coffee and a chance to get to know each other. Then off in the trucks to the higher woods and fields with the dogs. The dogs (well, maybe half of them) walk with us to to the various oak trees and find truffles under the soil. When they deliver these to the handlers, they are rewarded with a biscuit. This was fascinating to watch. (The other half of the dogs just did dog things). After we collected enough, we drove to a high plain where we cooked and ate eggs with the truffles and drank a bit too much prosecco. The local sheep (and wolf hounds) joined us for a fun time in the sun.Back in the little village, we were served unlimited wine, bruchette, and sliced meats. They made pasta from scratch, and then we were served an amazing late lunch with wild boar. The conversations were real, we made good friends, and would definitely recommend this as a highlight of any trip. (We took too many pics - sorry!).

Fonti del cl*tunno is a natural oasis with stunning emerald waters that have inspired poets and writers throughout history. It's a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle, offering refreshment from the summer heat. The area also features wooded trails circling a lake inhabited by swans and a noted restaurant. Nearby, visitors can explore the UNESCO-listed early Christian sanctuary, Tempietto del cl*tunno.

Beautiful and peaceful park with ducks and swans, you pay a very small fee to get in and you can buy some food to feed the birdsWas a nice place to go a morning walk

M. K — Google review

A shame that this small, beautiful park is privatized and locked behind paid entrance. I only once visited the private park, but found it quite limited and the paid entrance didn't really make sense (although it's only 3€).The emerald waters of the cl*tunno are really a wonder. This was once a large river: in roman times boats were able to navigate it, and its source was of strategic and religious importance. Seismic movements drastically changed the river which then became the stream of today. Particular minerals make the water mesmerizingly colourful.Good news! You can enjoy the scenery without entering the paid area. There is a nice free area that is of great beauty as well. Just keep on walking on the main road on the entrance side until you see a restaurant, and enter the natural area there. By the look of it, the park and restaurant area were clearly part of the same park not too long ago, but they've been brutally split with wire fences for monetary reasons. Also consider that there is a very nice free walking path, which runs on the bank of the cl*tunno stream, between the enclosed park and the countryside. You can find it after the end of the restaurant free area path: just keep walking towards the countryside, then you will find a horizontal car barrier, get around it and enjoy the walk. All pictures I posted here come from this "free" visit. The area would really shine if they merged all these things together and

It is ok good. It is fascinating the fact that it is water spring. I wouldn’t recommend this as the only reason to travel to the area as it is quite compact and not much to do after the few first paces

Really nice, wild fowls all over the place, some rare species can be found here, crystal clear waters surrounded by lavish vegetation, entry €3 per person but that's OK.

The Leo Wild Park is a farm school that is ideal for families with children. It offers a self-guided tour that takes approximately one hour to complete. The entire route is exposed to the sun, which can make it quite hot on sunny days. However, visitors can reserve barbecues and enjoy a picnic in the shade. Overall, Leo Wild Park provides an excellent opportunity for families with children to learn about agriculture and animal husbandry in an interactive environment.

The park itself is not very big, but they have planty of animals. We liked it. Also there is possible to have picknick or barbecue. Animals look well, because they have a lot of space to walk around

Anyway there is the potential to improve it, space is not lacking.(Original)Non sono rimasto ammaliato, un Bioparco con pochi animali, niente di stratosferico, molto assolato, bar piccolo e con poca scelta, e una strada larga una corsia (noi in camper) e tutta in salita è stata un po’ difficile l’incrocio con alcune macchine, e in salita, insomma una media di 9€ a persona per me è un po’ alto, forse conviene quello di Roma, forse il paragone è troppo elevato ma sta di fatto che la differenza in 4 è di circa 10Euro (se preso con tariffe in offerta) tra i due parchi, sono contento di aver dato un contributo al mantenimento di questo parco ma a quel prezzo mi aspettavo qualcosina di più. Eremo delle Carceri is a hermitage and oratory located on a forested hillside that dates back to the 13th century. It was an important place of worship for St Francis and other saints who lived there during that time, making it a holy ground filled with their spiritual essence. The peaceful environment of the woods provides an ideal setting for deep meditation and prayer, offering visitors a chance to connect with heaven.

If Francis has ever provoked something within you, this is a great place to come; to sit in a chapel service, to offer a short prayer in his cave and see how drastically different his method of following Jesus was from us today or walk and pray the many trails that intersect the area as you search for God. Highly recommend a full day—don’t just come and see—come, pray and search for what is behind what caught your attention about St. Francis in the first place.

Joshua — Google review

An enchanting spot in the hills. Would highly recommend walking up and taking the forest path - everyone seems to walk up the road but there is a very clearly signed path from the city wall which goes up through the forest. It is a challenging uphill climb but well worth it for the views and peaceful site. Plus the feeling of pride at the summit! The hermitage complex is stunning and well worth the walk up.

One of the best Holy Place to pray, meditate and think in the whole world. Just get into those Holy Woods, sit, think and pray. You'll completely understand what I mean. The same air, trees, paths are filled with the Holiness of the Saints that lived there in the XIII century. You can't miss this place.

If you go to Assisi, a beautiful sanctuary to go to is Eremo Della Carceri. You can walk the 4 km up hill, with spectacular views which takes between 1-1 1/2 hrs. There is a welcome cafe at the entrance 🙂. The caves here are where St Francis and his brothers lived and prayed and the monastery was built around them. The grounds on the mountainside are so peaceful to walk and pray in. The monastery has some small passages and narrow stairways, but this adds to the atmosphere. The monks there are very welcoming. Beautiful.

Debbie R — Google review

A refuge in the hills above Assisi. Established by Francis of Assisi in the 13th century, this place has offered solace for countless people over the centuries. The buildings are a working monastery, with preserved historic sites, accommodations, chapels and outside areas for reflection. It is free to visit.

We foolishly decided to walk from Assisi to Eremo delle Carceri. It was a great hike, with wonderful views but the 2.4 mile plus 420 m elevation rise was a challenge. The sanctuary is peaceful place with a well laid out tour of the site. It was eye opening to see the rock St Francis called a bed and the rest of his cell. The grounds are extensive and worth exploring.

If you visit Assisi, the Eremo delle Carceri is the perfect destination to follow the footsteps of St Francesco. If you decide to walk up, it is a 4,1km, approx. 1,5 hours steep uphill rocky hike, but it is well worth it, as the scenery is breathtaking. The hermitage is just pure serenity, the perfect place to connect to St Francesco. You can feel all that he stood for. It is a truly sacred place.

Jovin S — Google review

Interesting landmark even if you are not catholic. Recommended!Saint Clare of Assisi and Saint Francis of Assisi had a profound and intimate relationship, both spiritually and personally. Clare was inspired by Francis's dedication to a life of poverty and service to God, and she sought his guidance in her desire to live a similar life of devotion. When she was 18, Clare heard Francis preach during Lent in the church of San Giorgio in Assisi, which deeply influenced her decision to dedicate her life to God.Clare sought Francis's mentorship, and he became her spiritual guide and mentor. He supported her decision to reject a marriage arranged by her family and helped her escape to join him and his followers at the Porziuncola, where he cut her hair and she donned a simple habit.Francis established the Order of Poor Ladies (later known as the Poor Clares) for Clare and her companions, which embraced a life of poverty, prayer, and service. Clare became the abbess of the first monastery of the order, San Damiano, near Assisi.Their relationship was characterized by mutual respect, spiritual kinship, and shared commitment to poverty and service. They corresponded frequently, offering each other guidance and encouragement in their respective religious endeavors.Their bond continued even after Francis's death, with Clare continuing to draw inspiration from his teachings and example. Clare's devotion to Francis was profound, and her life and work were deeply influenced by his spiritual legacy. The Basilica of Saint Clare (Basilica di Santa Chiara) in Assisi is a significant religious site dedicated to Saint Clare of Assisi, one of the first followers of Saint Francis of Assisi. Constructed in the 13th century in the Gothic style, it houses the remains of Saint Clare. The basilica is known for its simple yet elegant architecture, with notable features such as the rose window and the crucifix attributed to Saint Francis. It holds a special place in the hearts of pilgrims and visitors seeking spiritual solace in Assisi.

Genevieve B — Google review

The striped facade in side is simple but very beautiful, the side buttresses give it might, like the faith of all pilgrims. The Basilica is dedicated to the founder of the Poor Clares and her crypt is located below which is accessible to the public for FREE. Strictly no photo.

Exterior is pretty bland, but surroundings are spectacular: great panoramic view of Umbrian planes. Altar and crypt underneath are definitely worth visiting

Simply amazing! You need to visit here and feel the presence of peace & faith.

We skipped our group lunch to walk to the Basilica. It was amazing and so worth it. The church is so beautiful. This is a MUST see!

Chelsey L — Google review

One of my favorite places to go to in Assisi Italy, it is also the place where English Mass is held especially during Easter season!

Mike P — Google review

Dedicated to Saint Clare of Assisi, a follower of Saint Francis of Assisi, the basilica exudes a sense of tranquility and devotion. Elegant facade in Gothic architecture. Stairs will bring you down to see the tomb and body of St. Clare.

Bobby S — Google review

A truly beautiful place to be. Occasionally it will get a bit noisy, but it calms down soon enough. The tomb of St. Clare shows a beautiful testimony of her life and is an excellent dedication to her, as are the relics which can be seen just after you visit the tomb area. There is the main altar area, the side chapel (which houses the tabernacle and is especially dedicated to silent prayer), and the altar above which the original cross of San Damiano hangs. Each one provides a different atmosphere in which to pray or to simply be present, and all are wonderful. There is nothing like gazing upon the original Sam Damiano cross. Definitely do not miss this church in Assisi.

Basilica

Sights & Landmarks

The Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi is a historic church and Christian pilgrimage site. It is situated on a hillside and features remarkable Gothic architecture adorned with medieval artwork. Originally built as an ancient hospital, the Palazzo del Monte Frumentario, it now houses two separate churches stacked on top of each other. UNESCO recognizes this architectural masterpiece as a World Heritage Site since 2000.

This cathedral is an awe-inspiring place! All the frescos by Giotto are masterpieces. The place is steeped into history, religion and significance. Well worth the daily trip from Rome.

Hugo P — Google review

A tranquil beautiful place. The building was quite overwhelming in its quiet magnificence. So disappointed not to be able to take photos but totally understood. The ceilings around the altar are so breathtaking in their beauty. The architecture and different painted scenes are complex and overwhelming in the skill seen. Some of the best I have witnessed in my journey to Rome and Assissi. Italy's architectural gifts are blessed. The crypt where the remains of St Francis lies is small well lit staffed and busy. There are pews to rest upon to enjoy moments of quiet reflection and candles can be purchased which are lit after one's departure. The views from outside the Basilica are far reaching and splendid. A place to hold in the heart.

Carole D — Google review

One of the most beautiful Basilicas I have seen. Esthetic work and beauty is amazing and then you enter into the Basilica and it’s one of the rarest places made with that architectural design. Plus the art work in display inside the building is incredible. A must visit.

Musa R — Google review

The Basilica of St. Francis is marvellous and mystical place, bringing together a number of renaissance masterpieces and an extraordinary architectonic complexity. Cimabue, Giotto, the Lorenzetti brothers, Simone Martini – the greatest artists of the 14th Century, have painted frescoes on the walls and ceilings of this place. An obligatory destination for believers and non-believers alike, appreciating art and architecture.

We enjoyed walking the streets of the little village of Assisi.Assisi was the birthplace of St. Francis, who founded the Franciscan religious order in 1208.Papal Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi was where St. Francis was born and died. The Basilica consists of an upper and lower sanctuary, where St. Francis is buried. The church is decorated with gorgeous geometric designs, frescoes painted in many colors, some with gold stars on a blue painted background. The best is to hire a private guide, and I recommend this, to understand the historical significance of this holy site, but I used my phone to get the right info.

Donato M — Google review

This was my second time to come here, and the experience is surreal. The serenity of the place, the architecture to marvel at, everything comes together. A place to go for the religious. Take time to visit and reflect on the life of Saint Francis.

The Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi is a truly awe-inspiring place. The architectural beauty and grandeur of the basilica are simply breathtaking. The spiritual atmosphere and rich history make it a must-visit destination for anyone seeking a profound and moving experience. A remarkable testament to the legacy of Saint Francis of Assisi.

Erik N — Google review

The most-touted church in Assisi, with its first stone laid in 1228 and the Superior Basilica completed in 1253. The body of St. Francis rests within. Its custodians, the Franciscan friars, can be seen sauntering around or praying in divers locations. An interesting fact is that a part of its roof fell in the aftermath of the earthquake of 1997, and the paintings of Giotto were badly damaged. However, the repaired Basilica can be seen now in its full glory.

Cordasuena V — Google review

A beautiful church with an interesting history. It was built in the 13th century on a hill where death sentences were carried out, known as Hell's Hill. Later the name was changed to Paradise Hill (after the canonization of St. Francis). Here is the tomb of St. Francis. When visiting the basilica, it is worth strolling the streets of Assisi. However, only 8 km away (approx. 20 minutes by car) there is another Basilica with an atmospheric, tiny church inside, rebuilt by St. Francis.

W3kije T — Google review

Such a holy and magnificent cathedral to visit. This was one of the most emotional visits. You can feel the presence of the saints in this cathedral. You feel safe and peaceful. It’s full of valuable objects from the ancient times.I wished that we all could be like Saint Francesco!

MOHE F — Google review

A historic and amazing basilica, obviously a must visit while you are in Assisi. Must visit both the Inferiore (lower) and Superiore (upper) basilica areas. The Inferiore piazza is quite large as captured in these pictures. The basilica superiore is so peaceful and serene, true to the nickname of Assisi, the city of peace, no wonder a UNESCO a World heritage site. If you have only a day to spend here, would recommend visiting the basilica in the evening hours, as you can make a the most the most out of it with the spectacular views during the sunset hours from up top of the whole area and the valley.

I have been here multiple times and it impresses each time, which is why I keep coming back. Visiting the upper and lower Basilicas is incredible. The beautiful frescos by themselves are worth a visit. We spent >1 hour visiting the entire complex. I highly recommend the free Rick Steve’s audio guide tour when visiting. If you come to Assisi this is a must visit location. If you are questioning whether to make a visit to Assisi this should make the decision easier. There is a wonderful spirit of St. Francis here.

Jared S — Google review

This is such a beautiful Franciscan like church. Its architecture is simple but grand and impressive with art on the walls and side altars dedicated to other relevant saints to St Francis. The lower church has confessions being heard during the day each day at times noted on their website in English and Italian and there is mass 5 times a day between the upper and lower altar. The lower church was honestly more impressive and the tomb of St Francis was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen.

Joe S — Google review

This was truly a highlight! We somehow went when it was not crowded. We saw the crypt where St. Francis is buried. The lower portion of the basilica in many way is almost more beautiful that the upper portion. Both upper and lower have frescos by Giotto. Such an incredible experience!

Christopher W — Google review

This was very beautifully built and the story behind it is wonderful. I personally recommend to put on your headphones and listen to "St. Francis" by Kristene Mueller. It was definitely shocking to see countless number of people going down to St Francis' tomb to kneel down down and pray (to him) followed by kissing The tomb.

Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi...What an incredible experience.A beautiful Basilica and then to know that St. Francis blessed this area just makes you feel blessed to be there.

Assisi is a hill town and the birth place of st Francis, we visited during a national holiday and the palace was overwhelmed with devout Christians visiting. An amazing, historic and a very large complex to view. It has a Covent be to it which is not open to public. There are a lot of shops and restaurants and one can spend half a day easily in this immersive place.

Basilica of St. Francis of AssisiThe Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, a prominent Christian pilgrimage destination in Italy. It serves as the main church for the Roman Catholic Order in Assisi, the town in central Italy where Saint Francis lived and died. The basilica left me awe-struck with its remarkable beauty. The interior is beyond words in its splendor. Photographs inside were strictly prohibited. Beautiful!!

Simple with a quiet beauty. We arrived early with no wait at the door. We felt privileged to sit and take it all in. Enjoy your visit!

D L — Google review

Beautiful sanctuary, it is really amazing to walk around and see how beautiful it is inside. It has high and lower levels. In the lower level, you can find the tomb of Saint Francis de Assisi. It was the most spiritual place I visited recently. There is also a shop downstairs you need to go straightforward up to the end of the high level then take the stairs to go down. To find the Basilica you have to walk 15 minutes but there are a lot of shops around and restaurants, a good tip is to go early in the morning to enjoy the place and walk through the medieval small roads. You can find parking inside the town or outside in the public parking. Really amazing place!

The Museo della Porziuncola is a beautiful and spiritual place that holds great significance in the history of St. Francis. Located in Italy, it was on this site where he founded the Franciscan Order and also passed away. The museum commemorates his life and teachings through various exhibits and artifacts, making it a must-visit destination for anyone interested in learning about St. Francis or seeking spiritual enlightenment.

We made a pilgrimage from St. Clare, to St. DaMiano, to the Museo della Porziucola. We did not realize that we were retracing the last journey of St Francis before his death. He had gone to see Clare at DaMiano the day before his passing. What a beautiful and spiritual day. I highly recommend doing it.

Interesting museum with some lovely pieces. However, their information system does not work. It is QR code based, which would be good, except there is no signal for a mobile phone inside the museum amd there is no WiFi. So, you have no means to learn about what you are seeking. Basilica

Sights & Landmarks

The Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli is a 16th-century church where St. Francis founded his order in Umbria. The church boasts a history and art museum, and is located outside of Assisi, making it ideal to have a car if one wants to visit. Mass is held on Sunday mornings, but visitors can still explore the grounds during this time.

This Francis-linked site is a bit off the main trek, but should be considered essential and is actually rather easy to reach, particularly if coming in by train. It is an easy 1/2 mile stroll from the station.Once there you will not only find the stone chapel that Francis and followers rebuilt at the start of his ministry, but a chapel marks the place of his death. The complex is vast with interesting displays of creches, some focus on telling the story of Clair, and a large bookshop.Connection between the train station and Assisi is available by a city bus ride - buy inexpensive tickets from the helpful shop at the station - that transports one near the top of town where gravity can lead you through the town.

A grand church set in the suburb on its name, outside the historic town of Assisi. Enjoyed a picturesque walk from the old town to the Bascilica. Unfortunately the Bascilica is currently undergoing major renovations so not at its best. But a worthwhile visit all the same.

Chris C — Google review

A church within a church. The little church marked the place where St Francis of Assisi died, a church, the size of a hut was built to mark the place and some years later, a much bigger church, a Basilica, was built encapsulated the little church. The remains of St Francis of Assisi is in the tomb up the hill. The monks led the praying of the rosary in the little church, I witnessed much piety and reverence from the community. Thanks be to God.

Karen C — Google review

The basilica encapsulates the small church used by St. Francis as his first monastic foundation.

Cordasuena V — Google review

I think everyone knows of this place if they visit Umbria. It is very famous but is a bit outside Assisi I recommend having a car if you want to get here. They have mass on Sunday mornings but you can still enter to look around even during mass which was a bit weird but still worth a look.

Steve T — Google review

Highly decorative inside and huge. A rose garden can also be seen from inside and there are gorgeous vaulted ceilings too along the corridors.

Kelly R — Google review

What an amazing little original church. It so suited St Francis. The elaborate one built around it, to protect it, would not have earned his approval. Nevertheless it is well worth the visit.

This is a very special place because inside this enormous church is the tiny church worshipped in by St Francis of Assisi. At the moment the outer church has scaffolding around much of the dome and inside as many repairs are taking place. However, you can still see the impressive art work and architecture. The small church is very special and still has the frescos inside. You can walk along a special bricked pathway from Assisi.

A very nice basilica in Assisi, probably often overlooked because people flock up to the hilltop to the town and the more famous basilica and other attractions. This is on the other side of the main train station of Assisi. It’s actually walkable distance from the train station. There is a nice museum, rose garden and gift shop in side as well. The piazza Della Porziuncola in front of the basilica is quite large and nice to walk around and take in the beauty of this place.

A must to visit, really! This museum is divided into 3 sections: pre-roman and roman archeology, medieval paintings and modern ceramics (i.e. locally manufactured ceramics with an ancient particular process). Also the castle has many singularities, like the notable and fortunately saved medieval image of the Trinity. It was very interesting to go through these sections and discover how many uniquenesses are saved into this little, beautiful and hidden castle...

Paolo Z — Google review

You can enter this fortress using the multiple ticket for all the local tourist sites, costing only 6 euros and good value at that. The Rocca Flea is a stunning complex of buildings, filled with an extensive range of art works and historically interesting exhibits. The tour takes you up and down a variety of stairs leading through the rooms and finishing at the starting point. The garden, although neglected, is also worth a look, as it offers some splendid viewpoints.

Judith K — Google review

The castle was deserted on the day of our visit, and it took less than 20 minutes to wander the mix of stairs and (steep) rock steps to see the inside, which mainly exhibited religious iconography, old wooden doors, broken Roman pottery, and some large amphora dating from the 1920s. It's worth a brief visit to photograph the impressive exterior.

Was a nice visit, but due to the heat my party could not stay too long. Parking spaces are very limited. We will be back because the building and exhibits deserve it.With the one ticket you can also visit other museums and the cathedral, but it just was too hot to do that.

The Paper and Watermark Museum Fabriano is located in a former monastery and is one of the most significant museums in central Italy. It offers demonstrations of handmade paper making, showcases watermarks, and provides courses for those interested. The museum presents the authentic story of Fabriano within a captivating setting, where visitors can explore the history, tradition, culture, and resourcefulness of the city through the art of handmade paper processing.

Visited the museum with my wife and our dog during our stay at the Villa Gioia in Fabriano. We had to follow a group of school kids of about 13-14 years old. The tour was guided by a young man who was excellent in his presentation. The language was Italian but I think it's possible to obtain a translator for other languages. I was amazed by what I saw and heard, the explanations were clear and also entertaining at the same time. We were able to see the process of ancient paper production and also modern paper production. There was also a very interesting part on the introduction of the watermark, used on many types of quality paper and in particular paper currency. This museum is great for kids and adults and is also visitabile by less able thanks to the staff who provided a ramp for my wife to enter the museum and then transported her to the first floor in a lift. There is also a very nice shop to buy gifts.

I went to the Museo della Carta e della Filigrana for a class field trip and was able to learn a lot! At the museum there is a demonstration of the paper production. It is very hands on and you can make your own sheet of paper with the help of the guide. We were able to go to different rooms and look at different machinery. We also learned about money and how different currencies can be easier or harder to forge due to the technique used to make it. Overall it was an incredible experience and I would recommend to anyone!

A must-see in Fabriano, being the first town in Europe to produce paper, it has a great history. The museum itself is easy to reach, set in abeautiful ancient and well kept building, with any kind of facility for disable and has a video in English to explain what you are going to see before you start.

Ornella B — Google review

I went here for a class field trip! It was really cool to see because they take you through their history, you can also actually make paper if you take a tour. It is old fashioned but they show you how they keep up their modern touch. The town surrounding the factory is also very nice. It is totally worth seeing and making a stop at their factory with their excellent guides!

Wynne S — Google review

Let me start by saying that I am not a museum person. I reluctantly go to museums because my husband loves them and so does 1 of our 3 boys. BUT, this museum blew me away. They give regular tours. Being that we don’t speak Italian, Claudia showed us 2 short videos in English and took our family on our own private tour to explain everything. She has a passion for paper making and it’s history. There are replicas of old ways of making paper and a model of the newer way. We learned about watermarks and UV light for currency. We all learned a lot more than that and were engaged by the museum & Claudia. Thank you for a wonderful experience! If you’re wondering whether to go or not, go! You will be glad you did!

DS C — Google review

I went to the Museo della Carta e della Filigrana on a class field trip about a week ago. When we first walked into the museum, you find yourself in a foyer area surrounded by works of watermarks on paper. The tour guide approached our group and she announced that she was ready to get started. Our tour guide, Francesca, was very informative throughout the whole experience and was more than willing to answer our questions to her full capabilities. The first room she took us in, she showed us the first machine that was able to turn washcloths into a flattened paper that people are able to write on. In that same room she brought a colleague and showed the group first hand how to make the paper. They were also nice enough to allow some of my classmates to experience this process with their own hands. Overall, I would definitely recommend this place to anybody who is interested in this subject. I know I learned a lot about paper making that I never thought I would learn.

My visit to the Paper and Watermark Museum in Fabriano was wonderful. I attended the museum with a group, and our guide, Francesca, was very interesting and wanted us to be hands on when explaining the process of paper making. We were shown not only how handmade paper has been made in the past, but the history behind how it has evolved and how they now produce it. Great establishment, I would recommend stopping if you are in the area.

Caroline V — Google review

Museo della Carta e della Filligrana was a great museum. I visited the museum on a field trip with my university. Paper was born in Fabriano, the second most important Italian paper mill. At this museum you can watch the process of paper production and can have a hands on experience of producing their own sheet of paper! You are able to go through many different rooms containing old paper mills, old paper production, the vats and presses and machinery. To think about the ties it has to marketing and how it has evolved is very important with where marketing is today.

Amazing morning at the museum. We didn't book ahead and we probably should have. School groups were touring on the same day so when the guide finished with them, he offered to take us around. His English was limited but we managed and he was so kind to take us around. He showed my 6-year-old how to make paper and let him try it out. Highly recommended activity for families. I suggest to plan better than we did and go when there is an English tour so it's even better. There's a great playground and park across the street where you can do a picnic after.

Amazing experience. My tour guide, Michele, was very knowledgeable and painted a vivid picture of the discovery of the caves. His English is great and learning about the formations was really interesting. It was a magical experience and this has been my favorite experience in Italy, maybe even my life. These caves should be one of the natural wonders in the world. Also, the surrounding town is beautiful, you can take a nice stroll alongside the river. Try the dishes with truffles in them! Also, vincisgrassi (the regional version of lasagne) is delicious. The locals are so friendly, but some of them don’t speak English so it’s a great opportunity to practice your Italian! My heart is still in the mountains there.P.S. if you try to get to the Valadier Temple (Tempio del Valadier) the google map location for it is not accurate for the start of the trailhead. You will have to go about double the distance from the caves than what it says (the location of the cave on the side of the mountain). It will be on the right side of the road and about 800 meters from the caves. It is walkable, but a rather long walk on the side of the road to get to the starting point. But, it is worth it!

Even though it was quite busy, the visit was well organised. What we did not like is when we bought the tickets, it was advertised that you could follow an audio tour using the app instead of the guided tour.We liked this option as we were with young children a d their attention span for a guided tour is limited, especially in a language they don't speak. When we got up to the entrance of the caves; they said this was not possible and we had to wait an hour (!) for the English guided tour. The guide took a tremendous amount of time to explain each crack and sediment difference so we decided to walk on and tagged along to two Italian guided groups before we were 'caught' and told to stay with the guide. Our round took 1,5 hours; I did not dare to ask how long the normal tour would have taken. The cave itself is nice, well lit and the path is fenced and very accessible even for young children. There is only one route to follow so it's not possible to get lost.

The caves themselves are amazing! The company running them are running a slick operation and probably making a decent profit and in some cases have put profit before customers and this is why I've only given 3 stars... The buses that take you to the caves from the car park are mainly standing space with very few seats, they packed them full and it's a hot and windy road. The most annoying part however is that photos are forbidden, even with no flash. The only reason for this is so they can sell tickets to the photo tour where you're allowed to take photos. There's no pricing for the photo tour online however so I can only assume it's extortionate.

A beautiful Abbey in the area of the Marche. The Abbey dates from around the year 1000 a.d. and is in the Roman style. If you approach the Abbey from the far side of the river you enter the village by crossing the Roman Bridge and passing through a gateway in the tower which formed part of the protective wall around the Abbey. The Abbey has an access ramp inside the entrance to allow people with mobility problems to enter. Attached to the Abbey is a small but beautifully presented museum, speleo paleontologico and archeologico. The museum has a lift and disabled toilets. Dogs are not allowed.

The rest of the museum is quite useless and I must say also rather unwelcoming, with explanations sometimes inconsistent with what is present. The only positive note is the skeleton of a bear. However, given the very low cost (€4 or included in the €18 visit to the caves) and the splendor of Marta (as the ichthyosaur fossil was called) I was very satisfied.(Original)Siamo venuti qui per vedere il fossile di ittiosauro trovato a pochi chilometri da questo museo. The old Roman Forum is still evident in the layout of the square, with some of the most important historic buildings overlooking it. The Cathedral of San Lorenzo, which was started in 1345 and finished in 1490, is one of Perugias most famous landmarks.

Die Damen an der Spitze sollen Fruchtbarkeit symbolisieren, was damals in jeder Hinsicht wünschenswert gewesen ist (heute doch auch...).(Translated by Google)If you are a tourist, you like to have your photo taken here. Probably the most famous medieval fountain in Italy is impressive in size and architecture. Unfortunately it is fenced off, and rightly so considering the age of this magnificent fountain. It is still interesting that the Prior's Palace has received far fewer reviews than the fountain ;-). The Old Testament story is depicted in dozens of pictures - what a job that was... The Basilica of Sant'Ubaldo is a Catholic church situated on top of Mount Ingino in Umbria, Italy. It contains the remains of Saint Ubaldo, the patron saint of Gubbio - a 12th century bishop named Ubaldo Baldassini. The sanctuary also houses the famous ceri statues depicting other saints.

Interestinf church, on top of the hill ovelooking Gubbio. The lady at the bookshop was highly competent in the history of the saint and told us every detail we couldn't learn from a regulat guide book. We had great fun getting there with a 12 minute journey via cable car. Spectacular view!

Not opulent or extensively decorated. It is centuries old of course, and the mummified saint is visible above the alter. There was signage in English, which was a plus as I learned about the major ceremony occurring later in May. Cattedrale dei Santi Mariano e Giacomo is a significant church in Gubbio, constructed in the late 12th century and finished by 1241. If you are around Umbria you absolutely must stop by here as well as for the city and the (breathtaking) view of the square also to taste the typical testo cake and the truffle that reigns supreme😍 a total recharge for the heart!(Original)Uno dei luoghi dove preferisco andare per placare la mente e lo spirito.

(Translated by Google) This beautiful cathedral, dedicated to Saints Mariano and Giacomo, is one of the most important churches in Gubbio.Imposing and very ancient, inside, it houses many frescoes and the relics of many saints... Of note, the ancient wooden crucifix of the main altar, dating back to 1300.Absolutely worth visiting.(Original)Questa bellissima cattedrale, dedicata ai Santi Mariano e Giacomo è una delle più importanti Chiese di Gubbio.Imponente e molto antica, all'interno, ospita molti affreschi e le reliquie di molti Santi... The Palazzo dei Consoli di Gubbio is a notable medieval palace in the city of Gubbio, Umbria. Serving as a significant symbol for tourism in the area, it features gothic architecture and overlooks the picturesque Piazza Grande. The Civic Museum housed within offers visitors an opportunity to explore the town's historical development from prehistoric times to the 1900s through an enduring collection of local artifacts.

One of the most beautifull civic building in Italy build in 1330. The administration of town was in it. Inside is museum, but didn't go in. Bought to much chocolate in Perugia...so...happy wife, happy life.😂😭😂😭There is also a nice view of Gubbio from the square in front of it.

Palazzo dei Consoli is a Gothic palace built in the first half of the 14th century. The palace is built on a large platform. The palace houses a collection of local artifacts from prehistory onwards.

Check out the 500-300 BCE bronze scripture tablets. Written in Etruscan, the old folk of Umbria knew how to preserve their rituals and practices. In the museum. €6, worth every cent just for those.

Nigel M — Google review

A rare example of authentic medieval architecture. It's definitely a MUST SEE altogether, with many other precious jewels of Gubbio, "La città di pietra"

Great place to visit. See all the history of Gibbio and Umbria. During my visit on Sunday it was were not many people. Most of the cards are in English and Italian. For some there is only Italian. There is a possibility to get a ticket for tree musea in which this one is included. Even for the top view i would recommend to go into this museum.

What an amazing piazza in the front of the palace. Gubbio has tons of arts and architecture in a lovely context

What an amazing Medevil city in perfect state. A must see and experience. The city is easy to enjoy with wonderful artisan shops and eateries. The architecture dates back to the Roman's and Etruscans. The bread "crescia" is served hot and is perfect to add cheese or cold cuts for a yummy sandwich. Truffles available to purchase to bring home or eat over scrambled eggs or fetteccine! Unforgettable experience. Put it as a must see! Close to Perugia in Umbrian green valley.

The Ristorante Pizzeria Il Bargello is a great place to go for a fantastic pizza and delicious gorgonzola, black truffle gnocchi. The prices are affordable and the view from outside is really nice. The tiramisu was also very good.

Had the €15 menu of the day. Food was good, especially the meatloaf. Good value for money. Would recommend

+ good local food+ tables are set with cloth napkins+ everything clean and tidyUnfortunatelly we did not feel very welcome for several reasons:- We came with a baby (who was happy, smiley and calm) for lunch and were sat in another room in the back while all other guests were placed in the front of the restaurant. (We had a reservation and the front of the restaurant was not full!) We asked if we could also sit with the other guests. After our qestion we got a table in the front. We do not know if it was because of the baby or just a misunderstanding.- As the waiter did not smile one single time while talking to us we did our best to be the nicest guests. It did not help. We are still asking ourselves if we did something wrong.I would really come back for the food but our visit somehow leaves us with a strange feeling. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Great place with several seating options inside and outside, we opted for the terrace at the back. Primi and secondi were all excellent but the one that really floored us was the pannacotta with berries. Good wine selection as well.

Chose to eat here as it was recommended by many sites, but was very disappointing. We had 2 large starters, dishes were abundant but quality was average. Cold meats were tough, most of the grilled veggies were very greasy and overall poor quality. Pizza bread was about the best thing of the meal. Service very slow. We are only in Gubbio for one night but won't be back to eat here if we're ever in the area again.

I know Rome is the right city to have gnocchi, but this restaurant has the best around Italy that I ever tried!Affordable prices and the best gorgonzola, black truffle gnocchi ever. I’m still dreaming the tasty 😋!

Lovely pizzas. Coped well with Anne's lactose intolerance. At our request they substituted gorgonzola ( almost no lactose) for mozzarella which has lots of lactose.

Perfect evening to sit outdoors near the Uffizi. Wow. English speaking waiters with a sense of humor. Vegetarian food delicious. One in our party is GF and they have pasta as well as prepackaged bread.

Parco archeologico del teatro romano di Gubbio is a fascinating site for history enthusiasts, offering a glimpse into the Roman era. Although access to the grounds may be limited, visitors can still admire the ancient theater dating back to 33 BCE or even earlier. The museum in the town square's castle provides further insights, housing artifacts such as the original entrance lintel. Additionally, this location offers stunning views of the mountains and Gubbio city.

What an amazing sight on a clear blue sky day! Totally would recommend a visit. It's gorgeous and the cafe nearby with a playground is fabulous.

Been told it is the second biggest roman theater build in 1st century AD and still standing, can sit down 6000 people. Well it was closed while we were exploring town but while sitting in the shade on a bench children were playing in the park next to it.👍

Beautiful Roman Era theater, while you can not enter the grounds easily as they are closed more than open, you can get close to it to observe. Take the time to take the walk around the grounds to observe a theater they estimate that goes back to 33 BCE or earlier. You can learn more at the museum in the castle at the town square, where the original entrance lentel is housed. It's a treat for those interested in history.
