SATURDAY, DECEMBER8, 2007 MIDLANDS OMAHA WORLD -HERALD TV cameraman dies in rollover on way to Omaha BY ABE WINTER WORLD-HERALD STAFFWRITER Ralph Jay Binder, a free-lance TV cameraman, was on his way to Omaha on Thursday to cover the fatal shootings at Westroads Mall when he was killed in a rollover crash in Hall County. Binder, 58, of Denver, was driving on Interstate 80 near Shelton, when he reportedly swerved to avoid another car that had hit a slick patch about 10:15 a.m. His 1998 Chevrolet Suburban went into a ditch and rolled, the Nebraska State Patrol said. Binder, who was wearing a seat belt, was partially ejected from the SUV. He died at the scene.

Larry graduated from Westside High School at the top of his class and as a member of the National Honor Society. He enjoyed spending his free time snow skiing and earning a brown belt in karate.

He attended the University of Utah his first year in college, in order to be closer to the ski slopes. Larry then moved to New Hampshire, where he graduated from Dartmouth College with honors. Larry returned to Omaha to be near his family. Professionally, he was a CPA for the Federal government until he left his job because of a disability. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Earl and Essie Smith and Frank and Agnes Bele and mother, Earlene Bele, who for years, tirelessly cared for Larry and his illnesses and managed the maze of paperwork so she could be assured he would have the best care for the rest of his life.

Larry is survived by his father, Henry Bete, of Omaha and Council Bluffs, sister, Barbara, Warner, brother-in-law, Richard Warner, and nephews, Michael and Steven Warner, r. of Council Bluffs. Gary stayed very close to his farm roots, he had a passion for agriculture and was an avid animal lover. He worked his entire career in agri-business and regularly went back to help on the farm. Though his job was very demanding and required a great deal of travel, he could always be counted on to find time to work supporting the family farm in his schedule. Gary was also very active in working with youth. He has served as a trustee on the Nebraska FFA foundation and was actively involved in the selection of the Nebraska State FFA Officers.
